CASE APPLICATION Emirates Aluminium: Developing Skills of New Employees Forty-eight Emirati trainees began a series of develop ment programs at Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) that aimed at preparing them for future positions in the com- pany. Twenty-six were enrolled in the pre-employment course for smelter operations (PEC Smelter designed for the training of non-supervisory level employees. For a period of six months, these trainees learned about smelter operations. An additional 22 Emirati nationals also entered into a development program designed for recent university graduates. The degree holders who enter the program typ- ically receive 15 to 18 months of training in either opera- tions or support depending on their desired career path "We are very proud of the new training programs and the 48 trainees currently enrolled in them," said Ebrahim Al Hosani, the general manager of Emiratisation at EMAL.At EMAL, we are very conscious of the role we play in diversifying the economy of the Emirates in line with the 2030 Vision for Abu Dhabi, but of equal impor- tance is the opportunity, the obligation, we have to develop and feed human capital. Training programs for Emirati nationals are not just job creation; they enable their participants to build a foundation of professional skills they need to build an entire career." "New pre-employment courses on power plant operations and administration, designed for non- supervisory level employees, will start soon for 23 Emirati trainees," added Al Hosani. Since its inception, EMAL has demonstrated a desire to be the first choice of employment for Emirati nationals from a variety of disciplines. By mid-2010, Emirati nation als held 23 percent of supervisory positions within the plant and 10 percent of non-supervisory roles. In addition, EMAL announced offering full tuition scholarships to Emirati nationals majoring in three angi- neering programs at accredited universities in the UAE. Discussion Questions 1.
