The ego accomplishes this through the use of various defense mechanisms. Defense mechanisms enable the ego to control anxiety. Although intrapsychic conflicts frequently evoke anxiety, people may successfully defend themselves from conflict and never consciously feel the anxiety. This is accomplished through the use of defense mechanisms.
