Question: please help with #4. in class, we talked about how DNP is an uncoupler that was once used as an (extremely dangerous) weight-loss drug. 4.)
4.) There are two kinds of adipose tissue, White Adipose Tissue, WAT, and Brown Adipose Tissue, BAT. Small vertebrates and hibernating mammals have significant amounts of BAT, while humans only possess small amounts of BAT, as newborn infants. Cells, and their mitochondria, of BAT are structurally and physiologically different from WAT. They seem to function to "insulate" the animal by generating heat, while WAT does not. This heat generation results from the presence of an uncoupling agent built into the inner mitochondrial membrane of BAT cells, a proton transporter called thermogenin. Considering our in-class discussion of DNP, in what ways would you predict thermogenin to function differently from DNP
