A single concrete frame layout and cross section is shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 respectively
to be analysed with the Portal, Cantilever and Moment Distribution Methods.
a. Explain the differences of the three methods (Portal, Cantilever and Moment
Distribution) and state which method would be considered more accurate.
b. Use the Portal and Cantilever methods to analyse the frame on gridline 2 with a lateral
load of 120KN as shown in Figure 2 to determine the approximate axial, shear forces
for all members and the reaction forces (axial, shear and moment) at the fixed
supports (A, B, C).
c. Use the moment distribution method to analyse the frame on gridline 2 with a lateral
load of 120KN as shown in Figure 2 to determine the shear forces and joint moments.
d. Use the results from the moment distribution method to draw the bending moment
diagram.
Note that all members are assumed to have the same cross-sectional area and ignore their
self-weight.
