As we have learned over the last eight weeks, development is lifelong. Death is the final challenge. Each one of us will face death and experience the loss of loved ones and friends. How we think about our own mortality can shape how we face life. In fact, research has suggested that a higher perceived purpose in life is associated with less fear of death.
After completing your readings, online content and watching the video "What Dying Patients Taught This Doctor About the Fear of Death," please post a 500-word response to this prompt.

Doctor Fahad Saeed, in his video, asks "what does living mean to you and what does dying mean to you? Are they different?
- Discuss these questions and explain your answer..
- Discuss some fears that people have about dying? If you feel comfortable, you may share your own fears.
- Discuss the messages you have received about grieving, dying, and death. Many of these come from our upbringing but others may come from later in life, as an adult.
- How have these messages impacted you and your thoughts and feelings about death.
When we die, we may have a grave marker or tombstone. On that tombstone there will be a birth date and a death date. Between those two dates will be a dash. This dash represents everything in between birth and death. What's more important than your birth date and the day you die, is how you lived your life. It has been suggested that we should make the most of our "dash." Think about your own mortality, consider and discuss the following:
- If you were to die today, what would be your biggest regret? Explain.
- When you die, what would you want people to say or remember about you? Why are these important to you?
- What kind of ceremony or mourning ritual would you like to have when you die and what is important to you about this?
Finally, the author of your textbook talks about those who are in late adulthood engaging in legacy work, trying to leave something meaningful for later generations. However leaving a legacy can be accomplished at any age.
- As you wrap up this discussion, share three things that you hope are your legacy and again, why these are important to you.
