CASE 1: ELECTRICAL ACCIDENT A foreman service engineer from a Supply Authority was investigating a damaged three-phase supply to a building. It was extremely windy at the time and one of the three phase lines had broken and was lying on the ground and was visibly aching at the time of the accident. When the foreman was investigating the extent of the damage, whilst standing on a ladder at roof level, he received an electric shock. It is not clear how the shock was received but it appears that he accidentally came into contact with one of the remaining two conductors whilst holding onto the roof guttering. The work was not part of the foreman's normal duties but electrical service personnel were on strike at the time and management was carrying out emergency duties. His supervisor who was an engineer assisted the foreman. Because there is only a minimum number of staff was available to carry out the emergency work, the foreman and his supervisor had been working since early morning and the accident occurred just before dark. The foreman was not wearing rubber gloves at the time and although his supervisor released him from the electric shock situation he was dropped from the ladder during the rescue. The foreman was injured in the fall and subsequently sued his employer (the Supply Authority) for negligence in providing a safe place of work.
