Effective leadership is critical for the success of any project management initiative.$$ An effective leader is able to orchestrate group activities, set the tone of the group, and provide motivation toward achieving project goals.$$

An effective leader is a strong communicator.$$ This includes communicating with all project stakeholders both prior to and during a project's life cycle.$$ This effective communication leads to a clear understanding of the project's ultimate objectives and how each team member contributes towards that success.$$

I was part of a project that involved putting on a week long training session for investigators and analysts.$$ This included developing the curriculum, identifying and securing training venues, partnering with host agencies, and assisting with all aspects of travel and procurement.$$ The leader of this project was highly motivated and a great communicator.$$ His enthusiasm was contagious and as a result everyone was fully invested in the project.$$ While the project was a small financial success, the most important objective of the project owner was to provide investigative tools and techniques, for the broader law enforcement community to utilize, that would allow them to be more successful.$$ By that metric, the project was highly successful.

I was part of another project where the$$ team was tasked with making end of fiscal year spending recommendations regarding investments in technology.$$ After completing our research and preparing our recommendations, the team formed a consensus on where these investments should be made.$$ The project leader did not follow any of the team recommendations, but instead went with their own ideas.$$ No one on the team trusted that leader, nor wished to work with them again in the future.$$ In addition, some of those purchases ended up providing little benefit to the organization.$$
