The first week resulted in a selection for the architecture of your application, which serves as the foundation for the design stage of the project. One of the critical aspects of preparing a good design is to ensure that the application specifications are in place. Specifications are the detailed versions of the application requirements, and they will provide the information that is necessary to conduct the detailed design.

For this week, you will continue your work on the Software Design Document by adding a section for the requirements and user interface design. You will be taking the basic requirements that were previously established for the application and creating detailed specifications for the hardware, software, and database. You will also use the requirements to design the user interface for the application in preparation for the coding that will occur later in the project or concurrent to other design or implementation steps.

The deliverables for Week 2 are as follows:

    • Produce hardware specifications for the application, including specific components, minimum requirements, and a visual representation of the infrastructure that is required to operate the application.
    • Produce specifications for the software, including visual representations and a collection of the major functional and nonfunctional requirements, the major components and specifications for how they will communicate, and a discussion of the nonfunctional requirements. Appropriate Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams should be used to demonstrate the requirements.
    • Produce specifications for the database for the application. This section is not the database design, but the data requirements for the application that will be used later for the actual database design. The database specifications should include details about the required data, performance, and capacity requirements.
  • User interface design
    • Construct the requirements for the user interface (UI). Cases should be included where appropriate.
    • Include visual representations and a justification of how the UI design meets the requirements.
