"Hello class,

Discussion 1 What are your views on the relative roles and responsibilities of the federal versus state governments with regard to meeting the social needs of the country's citizens? (Remember the debates about federal and states' rights from the time of the founding fathers? See the constitution, Article 1, sections 8-10; Article 4 and Amendment X in the Bill of Rights.)With regard to the implementation of social policies, do you favor increased federal responsibility, where there will be greater consistency of benefits distribution and more central control? Or do you favor an increased responsibility for states, where there will be greater freedom to shape benefits distribution around local priorities and local budgets, with more decentralized control? The things that comes to our nations constitution that we are a country of ideas because in the Bill of Rights " Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." https://constitutioncenter.org/Links to an external site.. but what I have noticed in these past years that the government has not really been acting in the best interest of the people instead of people thriving people are dwindling.

Discussion 2 Immigration is a particularly difficult political issue. On the one hand, the U.S. is a country of immigrants. On the other, increasing numbers of both legal and illegal immigrants lead local populations and officials to call for moratoriums and for English language requirements.Do you think that there is a way that competing factors of being a relatively "open" country, the need for fairness and consistency in creating and applying immigration laws, the shifting needs of employers in a globally competitive economy, the need for democratic education for citizens, and not creating a bi-lingual country, can be reconciled? Can these factors co-exist in a way that does not take away existing civil rights nor endanger the safety of the country? If you were a legislator, where would you stand on next moves to take with immigration policy? I'm going to be straight up with my stance on immigration i'm against it because it is one thing that when people immigrate to our nation the right way or even asylum because they are hoping to contribute to nation capitalist population having an open country is fine but their needs to be rules. And if I was legislator I would try to pass a bill to make the illegals to take the citizenship test so they could contribute to nation wealth.

Discussion 3 We arecoming up on the half way markin ourreflections on socialpolicy design and implementation, and why that is so"political".We have seen approaches to the "social welfare" of the nation that were thought to be preventative of problems, e.g. the Social Security and insurance programs. We have seen an "all-out" attack on problems, e.g. in the "War on Poverty" and "Great Society" programs. We have seen at work strategies to reduce the federal role and put responsibilities back on individuals, along withthe necessity of everyone working who can, e.g. the "New Federalism" and Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act.Inasmuch as parts of all these approaches are still in effect, a case might be made for the importance of all these approaches and it is matter of adjusting the proportions periodically. As we near the half-way mark in this course, what is your take on these big picture issues? If you were campaigning for an elected position, what might be your platform statement on social policy? My stance would be to end homelessness because if we could get the economy back on its feet then we could then we could solve the bigger problems.
