Hello Professor and Class,

I agree with Kotters view, because he specifically says most alterations in norms and shared values come at the end of the transformation process (Kotter, 1). He also goes on to say that changes in a culture depend on results and require a lot of talk.

While I was a cadet at the United States Military Academy, there was a transition to a new set of rules that was given the acronym CASH/A (Cadets Against Sexual Harassment/Assault). There were many jokes said by the male cadets about this program and they criticized it as a witch hunt. There was a story that stood out to me where a cadet had a case regarding his sexual misconduct with a civilian who worked on campus. While he was reprimanded, what was interesting was as he was leaving the room he overheard the officers joking He chose that person! He shared that story with many other people and I have no doubt that it made it harder for the culture to accept the changes they were trying to institute.

A leader must lead on the battlefield and off the battlefield to be supportive of any changes in culture and make a difference (Bhasin, 2). Also, I found that female cadets didnt usually disapprove of CASH/A, and so increasing diversity of gender in meetings would improve the culture as well (Lorenzo, 3). Typically, Ive found that if your heart and head are in the right place (i.e. you are focused on whats best for the business and not yourself), you dont have to worry about being an example because you already are one.
