Hello Professor and Class,
The failed change that I chose to go with is Borders Bookstore and their change to online sales (Whatfix, 1). The bookstore was a competitor of Amazons and noticed that online sales were increasing more than physical sales, so they decided to partner with amazon to sell books online in addition to the stores.
This change slipped back to a focus on physical stores as time went on and the business invested in further developing their physical business rather than their online business. This occurred because of a lack of accountability for anyone to oversee the change to completion.
If there were clear goals to develop and build their online business rather than no plans to complete the change to selling online with Amazon, they would likely still be in business. They could have had prizes or parties to celebrate their progress in online sales and marketing and could have begun downsizing their physical locations to serve as rewards and deterrents, but they didnt.
One of the key messages from Kotter is that resistance is always waiting to reassert itself in your organization (2). It didnt take long from partnering with Amazon for the resistance in Borders Bookstore to push for more investments into their brick and mortar stores.
Another key element of change that was overlooked was that Borders didnt measure the impact of their changes to know if they were worth pursuing or not (Thought Ensemble, 3).
