Dale has a challenging time understanding why he is in counseling and sees it more as an obligation than a necessity for his marriage. In his three sessions so far, the counselor and client have worked on identifying emotions that can influence his aggressive behavior towards his wife and possible reasons for the aggression. When Dale was talking about how everything was "fine" with his relationship with his wife, Dale began to bounce his leg up and down, look down at the floor, and his breathing rate increased. The counselor then said, "I hear you say everything is fine between you and your wife, yet you are having trouble sitting still and looking up at me. Could you help me understand what you're experiencing right now?" Dale begins to disclose that his parents went through therapy when he was five years old, and they wound up getting a divorce one year later.
