I think some of the things that people call a project, but in reality it is routine work, are some of the modifications that I or some other people do to customer software at my job. For example, I had a customer who wanted me to contract a new building method and add it to their software(our program generates files that are used to create a G-Code for CNC machines). So, while I could be thinking that it was a project, I would qualify it as routine work. I think it does not qualify as a project because it does not have a set timeline; rather get on it when I have a chance. Another work example that I think I could think of as routine work, but it is a project. We are currently working on adding new features to our program, and I have to spend some time adding new parametric cabinet files that will be added to our program. This time, I have set a timeframe when I have to finish creating those files; it also has a certain scope of work that is provided to me, and I guess I can count the budget as my time that I will spend making these files. While routine work can be structured, I think the main challenges that can arise in this situation are that it might create a misunderstanding in prioritizing throughout the job. Projects also usually would have certain scope and resources allocated, and it might become unclear what the final goal and financial boundaries are for the tasks. Currently at my job, we are preparing for the trades show in Las Vegas that some of us are going to attend in July. So I will plan my project as if I were in charge of selected team members, allocating resources for marketing, planning travel, restaurant booking, creating flyers, doing booth preparations, arranging equipment shipments, etc. Preparing the company for a business trip for a trade show is a project, as it follows a project management triad including scope, time, and cost. It requires appropriate planning to book the booth, create the design for marketing posters and flyers, and prepare all the necessary paperwork. It is also a temporary project, as every trade show requires separate preparations and all the preparations must be completed by certain time.
