A historical situation where there was a failure to assess and correctly interpret the external environment was the 2020 United States Postal Service crisis. The 2020 United States Postal Service crisis took place after a number of events and resulted in backlogs and delays. One external element that impacted the delay in shipments was the COVID-19 outbreak, It caused shipping delays from shipments that were being exported and imported out of the country. In addition to that, with so many people self-quarantining, online shopping has increased. Another external factor may have been the mail-in ballots for the 2020 election. Prior to this, the United States Postal Service was already understaffed. the American Postal Workers Union has warned these reductions will hurt efficiency and customer service, (Lepsinger, 2017). The United States Postal Service could have corrected this oversight by increasing the number of staff again to help improve production.
