The causes of many deaths are social determinants such as literacy, fatalism, gender bias, racial bias, unemployment, and poverty (Foege ,2010). In 1424, the emperor of the Ming Dynasty in China, who himself experienced poverty, wisely remarked that "We must treat poverty like we would treat drowning, there is no time to lose." That quote states the poverty should be urgently addressed and treated like seriously. Today, poverty is the single biggest factor contributing to adverse health outcomes, affecting access to healthcare, nutritious food, safe housing, and education (Foege, 2010).
