One way technique that can be used to increase client empowerment is through teaching the client to advocate for themselves. This means to get involved in their treatment process. Ways to get involved in their treatment process is treatment adherence-attend the scheduled appointments, take medication as prescribed but if that medication has adverse or allergic reactions the client should tell the provider and a switch or different option should be given. Clients sometimes feel like the providers do not listen or do not trust/believe the client, often making the client feel unheard.
Another technique that can be used to empower the client is communication in the helping relationship of provider and client. Segal, Gerdes, and Steiner (2019) wrote that "To be empowered, people must believe that they are capable of doing things for themselves, gaining increased control over their lives, and influencing events and situations that affect their lives" (p. 12).
Self-efficacy or should I say autonomy-client should have all the facts-and be able to make their decisions without coercion from others, responsible decision making in the treatment process, communication skills (the client should be taught the difference in aggressive, passive, and assertive communication in life and with their medical care and the client should be taught that "they are the expert of themselves".
