Earlier this year, it was announced that Liberty Mutual was acquiring State Auto Group for $1 billion. "Through the deal, Liberty Mutual will add $2.3 billion in premium and State Auto's network of approximately 3,400 independent agencies across 33 states." (Admin., 2021) This deal is currently in progress so State Auto employees are currently operating under the State Auto brand through 2022.
The State Auto CEO issued this statement according to the insurance journal, "The opportunity to join the Liberty Mutual organization is a direct result of the incredible work of the State Auto team, beginning with the transformation of our business and culture that began in 2015." (Admin., 2021) The changes that State Auto made back in 2015 to its business and culture enabled this company to be in a position for Liberty Mutual to be interested in acquiring them. This change is innovative as it is bringing something new, or in this case, a large group of people into the Liberty Mutual organization.
As the acquisition is finalized, the State Auto employees will become Liberty Mutual employees. This means that these people will begin working under the Liberty Mutual mission and values. According to Liberty Mutual's CEO in reference to State Auto's employees, "For almost a century, State Auto has celebrated a culture of caring for people, exceptional service and deep philanthropy, mirroring our purpose to help people embrace today and confidently pursue tomorrow." (Greenberg & Anderson, 2021) Based on this statement, the State Auto employees will not notice much of a difference since the two organizations closely align in values. They will eventually take on the Liberty Mutual culture as leadership is merged and people from each company start working closely together. In my opinion, this change was not impacted by leadership personalities as the decision was probably influenced by the financial advantages for both companies.
I think this is an exciting change for both State Auto and Liberty Mutual. State Auto employees will have the opportunity to work for a Fortune 100 company at Liberty Mutual. Liberty Mutual has the potential for added revenue and is becoming the second largest insurance carrier. By outward appearances, this acquisition seems to be mutually beneficial.
This change is still ongoing and will not be finalized until early next year, but all signs point to it being a successful acquisition. It will probably be another year or more before data on employee job satisfaction for both State Auto employees and Liberty Mutual employees is reported.
