Please review and provide positive review and constructive feedback: In my opinion both focus on how leaders can effectively respond to challenges, but they have different emphases and components. From the authors' perspective, both models seek leadership effectiveness, but I can say that there are differences between the two models, while the Skills Approach model focuses more on specific competencies of leaders, the Adaptive Approach model responds more to the flexibility of leaders to changes and the complexity of challenges. Personally I see one main difference between both, it is the way each model work on problemsolving challenges.
Remember that Skills Approach typically comprises three main components: technical skills, human skills and conceptual skills. The Skills Approach tends to concentrate on the leader's capabilities and the specific skills that the leader possess to lead effectively. On the other hand, the Adaptive Approach involves several components focused on flexibility, changing circumstances, adapt strategies, and effectiveness utilization of resources where is needed. It emphasizes the leader's ability to respond to complex and changing environments, focusing more on situational analysis and realtime decisionmaking.
I found an article of the Boston Consulting Group, called "Your Strategy needs a Strategy" which says something really interesting and which I totally agree with and it's An adaptive approach works when the business environment is hard to predict and to shape, and when advantage may be shortlived. Ongoing, substantial changes in technologies, customer needs, competitive offerings, or industry structure may all signal the need for an adaptive approach. Business environments increasingly require this mindset: today, roughly twothirds of all industry sectors experience high volatility in demand, competitive rankings, and earnings, making longterm plans obsolete more quickly."
Having said that, in today's business world, I would incline more to the Adaptive Approach which is more descriptive and dynamic, highlighting the process of adjusting to challenges rather than focusing solely on skill sets.
