please share thoughts, or recommendation on the below. thanks While Netflix has expanded into over 190 countries, it has faced various challenges with this international expansion differing from country to country. One of the countries in which Netflix expanded into was India in January of 2016. While Netflix did expand into other countries during this time, the challenges that Netflix faced with expansion into India include government regulations, cultural diversity and local competitors. With government regulation in India, Netflix has faced many challenges with different regulations because there are strict regulations of the film and television industry but no the streaming space. However, since these strict regulations do exist, streaming platforms have been worries about facing these regulations as well. Therefore, streaming platforms in India have signed a new industry code of conduct and self-regulation for online content in India. This was the first time Netflix signed a code like this in a single country, but it did previously adopt a similar code for the Southeast Asia region. Other streaming platforms have joined Netflix in having this self-regulatory code which was introduced be the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). This Universal Self-Regulation Code allows streaming services to monitor their own content with a framework for age classification, content descriptions, and access control tools. Therefore, by taking this approach for self-regulation, Netflix was able to stray away from the strict government regulation that has been implemented with the film and TV industry in India. Another challenge that Netflix faced in expanding to India was cultural diversity. While Netflix has been focusing its resources on developing its Hindi and English offerings, it faces a great challenge because 450 different languages are spoken in India and 23 are recognized as official languages. Therefore, Netflix has had to focus on adding in Hindi offerings, rather than just focusing on offering English content throughout India. While this language barrier poses a challenge for Netflix, a difference in culture has been a great challenge as well. At first Netflix had just released as it had in the U.S., but it quickly realized that the Indian people used their phones more to watch videos, so Netflix strategically partnered with phone and internet service providers in India. In doing so, Netflix was able to reach a greater consumer base. While the content of Netflix did not have much about the Indian culture prior to entering the market, Netflix has made originals based on Indian culture in order to have more offerings for this region. However, this also poses a challenge for Netflix because the content they create may be controversial amongst the people in India. For example, a lawsuit that Netflix was hit with last year was over its first Indian original Sacred Games because one of Indias political parties alleged that the show disrespected the countrys late Prime Minister with an unflattering depiction. Lastly, Netflix has faced many different local competitors in India. While Netflix competitors, Hotstar and Amazon Prime, are constantly offering similar services and different prices, these services have been more popular in India. Hotstar has been more attractive to Indian users because of its lower price and its sport streaming. Indias sport culture, especially cricket, attracts millions of viewers during tournaments and Hotstar streams these sports matches through its platform. In order to overtake its competitors, Netflix has been reducing its price through its mobile offerings, creating more cultural content, and has partnered with different entertainment platforms to create series about the sports (specifically cricket). Overall, Netflix has faced many challenges in expanding internationally and has had to constantly update its content, strategies, and brand image in order to gain its customers in different regions. With expanding to India, Netflix is still learning and trying to add more cultural content, expand its customer base, and be more compatible with the government and the Indian people.
