Background While it is operating out of Naval Air Station North Island near San Diego, the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) is on maneuvers from Monday through Friday and in port over the weekend. Next week the captain would like to give shore leave for Monday through Friday to as many as the 2500 -sailor crew as possible. However, he must carry out the maneuvers for the week and satisfy navy regulations. The regulations are: 1. Sailors work either the A.M shift (midnight to noon) or the P.M. shift (noon to midnight) any day they work, and during a week they must remain on the same shift every day they work. 2. Each sailor who works must be on duty exactly four days, even if there is not enough "real work" on some days. The number of sailors required each shift of each day is shown in the following table.
