Surveying a Sample A sample is a group of people who are surveyed. If the results are reliable (the survey was fair and random; the sample was diverse and the sample size was big enough) the results can be generalized, to also describe a population. For example, if a sample 100 students in a highschool are surveyed, and 10 of them smoke cigarettes, it may be the case that 10% of the population of students in the region smoke. 3.
