The maintenance period is to take place in Perth, however, the load tests must be completed first, and can only be performed in the dock yard at Garden Island, Sydney. Furthermore, to get to Perth, the frigate must pass through Bass Straight and the weather bureau is predicting rough weather for the next 2 weeks, which maycause further delays. (Typical transit = 7 days; rough weather = 10 days). The most significant configuration change is the installation of a Mini Typhoon. This is a large, deck- mounted gun operated via dual joysticks from the operations room that defends against incoming missiles. This work is expected to take 6 weeks. The parts and test equipment required to repair the COMMS KPB system are only available in Perth. The following Statement of Work was included in the Contract: Planned maintenance items: Accommodations ladders used to board other vessels can only be tested using a barge i.e. not on deck-side as could crush people on ladder. Configuration changes required on 40 tanks need to be emptied, cleaned, tested for breathable atmosphere, send people in to conduct maintenance, seal the tank, then transfer fluid from other tanks into newly repaired tank so that maintenance could be performed on others. . Defects identified: Water purifier - needs maintenance and is likely to have defects. This must be repaird or the crew will not have access to drinkable water while in The Gulf.
