Topic: Cloud Computing
COMM2216: Formal Report Project Report Portion (25%) Background Students in COMM2216 come from either a technology, engineering, or business program. Staying in line with your program area/specialization, what innovative idea would you contribute to your local community or place of work if given the opportunity? (Note BCIT will not be permitted as a location or problem space as we worked on proposals that pitched new and improved course changes). To go from concept to completion on an idea, you will need to focus on ONE SPECIFIC problem and pitch an idea/solution that would improve the status quo financially, socially, environmentally, or technically at a specific address a real place. YOU MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM AND THE SPACE THIS IS NOT MADE UP. The problem and solution must fall within one of the four perspectives above. For example, in my community the local, public indoor pool is chlorinated. Thats a problem environmentally due to the evaporation of pool chemicals that contribute to greenhouse gases; and there is a risk of contamination in the local water system if not maintained properly. My idea would be to proposal a salt-water pool replacement due to its proven environmental benefits. After reading the assignment, I know I would be able to find credible evidence to support BOTH the environmental problem and related solution and write a successful report that meets the requirements and purpose. If I was a business student, I might want to solve a morale problem at my place of business because due to COVID everyone is working from home and there is a lack of team spirit. That is a social problem. I might research management practices that would improve teamwork, social cohesion, and a sense of community for my organization. You get the idea. This is your chance to make a difference and contribute an idea that is your own to make your area of specialization, your community, your workplace a little bit better than you found it but it must be relevant to your program and be feasible and realistic. Stay away from sweeping claims that a small report like this could not solve (it cant solve global warming, as an example). Background The primary stakeholder is Dr. Desmond Franklin Head of Research and Innovation at BCIT. He wants to offer UP TO a $100,000.00 grant to fund your innovative idea. The secondary stakeholders you will also need to consider will be anyone affected by your idea (coworkers, the public). Be mindful that you choose something reasonable and within that price-range. YOU WILL NEED TO PERFORM SOME PRELIMINARY RESEARCH ON YOUR OWN TO ENSURE YOUR IDEA FITS WITHIN THE PARAMETERS OF THIS ASSIGNMENT BEFORE YOU SUBMIT THE FIRST sub -assignment which is a topic request. Students need to gain approval before they get started. This is an insurance step to ensure you choose something that is feasible and in line with the purpose of this report (more on that in the following pages). COMM2216: Formal Report Project The report will include: 1. A short cover letter to your stakeholder 2. Title Page 3. Table of Contents 4. Executive Summary (1 page) see Week 8 lecture/course materials 5. Background (Problem statement expanded page) see Chapter 10/Work Plan 6. Research Findings 3-4 main topics + sub-topics = 4 pages approx) * 7. Cost Analysis (1/2 page or less) 8. Project Limitations and Challenges (and how you will overcome them) (1/2 page) 9. Conclusion and Recommendation (1/2 to page) 10. Reference List (APA citations in alphabetical order) *Findings will be based on the 3-4 main topics you captured in the Work Plan Assignment The stakeholder wants research (the findings section) to prove your idea is realistic and perhaps based on a best practice already integrated elsewhere. They also want any limitations explored honestly as well (#8 above) as report writers cannot present a one-sided, biased proposal; most projects have a potential challenge or hurdle to overcome. For example, for my pool renovation idea, I would need to explore potential disruptions to service, cost, and provide some alternatives to mitigate those challenges. We cant completely reduce challenges, but we can offer a thoughtful approach to communicate we have at least considered them. The cost analysis section will be an estimate, but it must be based on credible, feasible research, pricing and/or on a realistic example of a comparable cost done elsewhere (in CDN not USD please). Writing Style Specifications Contain at least 2 integrated figures, illustrations or tables made by YOU (not from the internet) Contain at least 6 in-text citations in APA format Contain at least 6 credible, secondary resources (3 to support the problem; 3 to support the solution) Plain font (Calibri or Times New Roman) 12 pt. 1.25 or 1.15 spaced, with clear breaks between paragraphs and sections (NOT double spaced) Paragraphs aligned left (no indents) Structured paragraphs (no longer than 8 lines) Concise, active-voice sentences (no longer than 15-20 words) You want to strive for quality of information, not quantity or technical depth. It must meet the needs of the reader and overall purpose to gain approval (and eventual funding) to move forward on your innovative idea. Write this as yourself and write to Dr. Bishop not your instructor (an audience analysis will be important). This is a workplace report and will resemble the green report weve studied in Chapter 11 it is not an academic paper. This report will not detail construction, phases of implementation, lists of suppliers, or installation of any kind. The purpose of the proposal is to articulate/communicate the existing problem, why its a problem, and offer a solution thats supported with credible, reliable, relevant research. Youre pitching the idea only. COMM2216: Formal Report Project Presentation Portion (10%) You will also deliver an effective presentation to your classmates about your idea in 5-6 minutes total presentation time, with a minimum of 18 slides (Prezi or PPT). The slides will include a title slide, outline/agenda slide, summary slide and reference slidethe middle content is up to you. We will have a full presentations lecture and lab later this term where youll learn valuable tips and tricks to ensure you deliver a memorable and informative presentation. Because we are online, your presentation will be narrated either via voice or video and recorded as a slide show. Details and Specifications Follow the guidelines of planning/writing/completing an effective presentation from Chapter 12. Begin with a hook (positive opening statement), then move on to your introduction about the topic (problem/purpose), body (idea, benefits, relevance, research), conclusion, and a final take-away message (what you have learned about the topic while working on it). The presentation must include a References slide at the back in APA format If using graphics/photos, include a minimized photo credit: website name not the URL. A successful presentation will contain the following characteristics: Attention-getting begin with a hook or enthusiastic opening Explanatory - what the subject is about and a description of a problem it aims to solve Analytical - why it is interesting/ important/ beneficial/significant to BCIT and the audience Reflective key take-away messages (what you learned, how you felt, epiphanies, discoveries) Informative offer your audience a memorable ending/close or where to go for more information (consider a hand-out) - do not end with this is the end Remember the target audience is your peers and the presentation is meant to be persuasive. It should capture the highlights of your research - not all of it. Bring your research to life in an interesting and interactive (and visual) way as if you were in a classroom full of your peers and competing for the $100,000 grant money (you will each watch many presentations on our last day of class at a set time.
