To understand homelessness in Newport, Rhode Island, we can use Ecological Systems Theory and the Strengths-Based Perspective. Ecological Systems Theory, developed by Urie Bronfenbrenner, looks at how different environments affect individuals. It includes:

Microsystem: Immediate surroundings like family and friends.

Mesosystem: Connections between different environments, such as family and work.

Exosystem: External settings like a parent's job.

Macrosystem: Larger societal influences, like cultural attitudes and policies.

Chronosystem: Changes over time, such as economic downturns.

For example, clients at Newport Mental Health face issues like strained family relationships (microsystem) and job instability (mesosystem and exosystem), influenced by broader societal policies (macrosystem) (Allen & Mehring, 2022; Smith & Williams, 2021; Johnson & Brown, 2022; Taylor et al., 2021).

The Strengths-Based Perspective focuses on individuals' strengths and resources rather than their problems, promoting resilience and empowerment. At Newport Mental Health, we help clients build on their strengths and use available resources (Johnson & Brown, 2022).

For instance, Dennis, a homeless client with past charges, shows resilience in overcoming barriers to finding housing. This aligns with the strengths-based approach, which helps individuals use their strengths and community resources effectively (Lee et al., 2021).
