I think the way the VA EHR implementation was handled was not as great as it could have been. After reading the articles, it sounded like there were more potential roadblocks and problems instead of benefits. Not having the right budget amount reported, having less than 50% of employees being certified in using Cerner, multiple patient safety issues, etc. To add on, these problems play a huge role in the overall success the VA will have after it is successful with its Cerner implementation. Personally, I don't think there was a clear timeline and steps to complete in order have this EHR implemented, it kind of seems all over the place. Something that really shocked me was the fact that they altered the data to show that 89% of employees were proficient in using Cerner, while the actual number was 44%. If they had to alter that data, they may not be the best at ensuring patient safety and privacy. Additionally, reporting a false number for something so crucial could damage the VA's reputation in the eyes of others.
Something I think that would've helped is to do initial research on how much the budget should be, and see if that number can be reduced in any way if it's too high. Once the budget is known and fixed, then the VA could have started to comprehensively train its employees and come up with ideas on how to ensure patient safety and privacy (or even implement the ways other organizations have done it). Being such a large organization that covers so many people, patient privacy/security and accuracy should be the main goal.
