Welcome Aboard New Director, Welcome to Marcs Manufacturing and thank you for joining our fine organization as the Sales & Customer Service department director. Recapping our conversation from your interview the department you are going to lead is plagued issues that require immediate attention. For your first project I would like you create a comprehensive action plan correcting one of the departments persistent issues. The department you are preparing to lead has been without leadership for a while and many of the departments KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are suffering. I was very pleased to hear, during your interview, that you graduated from Texas A&M and had Professor Creazzos Principles of Management course. Knowing that, I feel very confident that you will be able to address these issues with department staff and resolve them quickly by developing a comprehensive action plan. The following are some specific issues affecting your future department: Employee Turnover Department turnover has risen considerably this year, more than doubling over the past few months. The departments highest turnover occurs among newly hired employees with less than 6-months of service. Additionally, employee exit surveys indicate that the former employees indicate that the job is not what they expected it to be based on their interview and job description. Employee Satisfaction Recall from your interview that our organizational culture stresses inclusion, diversity, autonomy, and a positive learning, innovative working environment. However, the most recent yearly employee satisfaction survey for your department indicates department morale is at an all-time low. Additionally, specific feedback indicates supervisor do not show respect to staff, or encouragement and do not engage them to be creative or innovative. Sales Numbers YTD department sales numbers are down by 10% based on year-over-year comparison despite increased sales-call volumes. Department statistics also indicate customer hold times are in excess of 3 minutes, and the number of disconnects have doubled, which is often an indication that customers hang-up never speaking to a representative. Customer Satisfaction Customer satisfaction has fallen from an average of 4.5 to 3.0 based on a 5-star scale which is the lowest it has been in 5 years. Recent customer satisfaction surveys indicate customers complaints are associated with long hold times, inaccurate billing, wrong product delivery, and missed delivery dates. The director of Shipping and Receiving, Tom indicates that many of the issues are a result of miss information provided to customers or incorrect shipping information provided to their department. Self-Identified Issue Because there are numerous issues within your department if you feel that another issue should take priority, please indicate such in your initial response S.M.A.R.T. goal submission. The first part of this project will be to create and submit a S.M.A.R.T. goal on the issue you select for your comprehensive action plan. Next, create an action plan that covers the four functions approach of leadership. Remember the planning function will focus on how you created your S.M.A.R.T. goal and how it aligns with organizations overall mission, vision, and goals. The Organizing function should identify what specific actions will be taken to correct the issue, who will complete them and what is the time frame for completion. The leading function should highlight what actions will be taken by both you and your leadership team to communicate the plan, lead and motivate staff, and how will you deal with conflict and resistance. Finally, the controlling function should specify which metrics will be monitored and at what frequency that will ascertain progress toward your S.M.A.R.T. goal obtainment, which types or control methods will you employ (feedforward, feedback or concurrent) and at what level of deviation will trigger action.
