LAB 3 PROJECTILE MOTION ."Does NOT require a formal lab write up. In a typed report include only: purpose, data tables, 4 graphs, answers to 5 questions and at least 2 concluding statements. Purpose: To analyze a projected object's motion in two dimensions using Displacement- Time graphs and Velocity-Time graphs. Materials: Tracker or similar app on phone or tablet 2 different objects to "project" . . . . Object of know length for scale Open area to perform experiment Procedure: 1 ) Find an open area that you can safely throw an object in. Make sure you can get the entire motion in the video without moving your phone/tablet. 2) Toss an object on an angle upwards and forwards, through parabolic motion - the motion of a projectile. Make sure to choose an object, such as a ball, that can be dropped without causing damage 3) Video tape the motion of the projected object. (SEE setup Instructions, only the equipment set up will change) You only need approximately | second of motion. Be sure your video recorder (camera) is very still and you have an object to set scale in the shot. 4) Repeat with the second object. Try to use objects that will have minimal air resistance. 5) Analyze the videos in Tracker or a similar app in order to extract time and distance data. 6) " At this point, select only one of the two objects you tested to continue the analysis on. You want to select the one that has the best data. *+ 7) Create tables of data (for the selected object) 8) Create a D-T graph for vertical motion AND a D-T graph for horizontal motion. Don't forget best fit lines where applicable. 9) Create a V-T graph for vertical motion AND a V-1 graph for horizontal motion. Analysis Guiding Questions: 1 . Being as descriptive as possible, describe the motion in the horizontal direction and in the vertical direction. Make reference to personal observations, data tables and graphs. 2. Use your graphs (not your data table!) to calculate the acceleration in the x and y directions. 3. What are the causes of motion and/or acceleration of the object over the course of the experiment? 4. Does the magnitude of vertical acceleration change when the object is at the top of its flight path? 5. If you were to drop the object and throw an identical one horizontally off of a roof at the same time, which one would hit the ground first? Explain why Concluding Statements: Please make a minimum of 2 distinct statements that expound what you have learned or what you have observed to be evidence of something you have learned in this unit so far, relevant to projectile motion of course
