Practice Being Other-Centered In this Mindshift, your challenge is to practice being other-centered for one week. Many of us live in a me-centered world, where events and relationships are measured by how much, and in what ways, they affect us. Being other-centered means stepping outside ourselves, and shifting the focus onto serving others for the good of the greater community. For example, instead of getting frustrated at an older adult taking forever to put away her change at the checkout line, give her a reassuring smile, and maybe offer to help her with her bags of groceries. Think about different ways in which you can cheer up others. Make someone elses day.

Critical Thinking Questions:

To what extent do you feel you are already other-centered in your life? Give some examples of your actions and decisions in this regard.

Was it easier than you expected, or more difficult, to focus for an entire day on being other-centered? Would you want to continue this focus for a second day running?

What did you learn from this Mindshift that surprised you?
