Question:
Pragmatism lacks a moral center. This approach can lead to undesirable decisions. Measuring growth is difficult. You may be troubled by the fact that pragmatism lacks a "normative core." It offers no guidelines, such as doing the greatest good for the greatest number, for determining right or wrong or for justifying a choice. Instead, you need to trust that a worthy solution will emerge through the process of inquiry. As some critics note, there is no guarantee that ethical inquiry and experimentation will produce ethical solutions. They point to the example of the Nazis, who engaged in a series of inhuman medical experiments.
1. The perspectives used by some of the leaders such as President George W. Bush, Linda Fisher, Justice Clarence Thomas, President Bill Clinton, and Senator Wendell Murphy, within the movie Food, Inc is considered Pragmatism due to the ties with Monsanta. This power allowed Monsanta to stop farmers from saving their own seed and this case was written by Justice Clarence Thomas. With this said why is the term Pragmatism a description for these leaders? Do you agree this is the correct term to use to describe these leaders and if not why?
2. Some of the farmers could be described in the Kant Categorical: Do what's right no matter the cost. This states For example, revealing a product defect to a potential customer might cost us a sale, but is nevertheless the ethical course of action. Why do the farmers feel that doing the right thing toward the American people is the ethical thing to do?
Then are other farmers that are afraid because they are overwhelmed by the shadow of power. This places them in a vulnerable stage, why?
