Case Study

SJSBC is an agency that leases sailboats from the boat owners who want to earn income from their boats when they are not using the boats themselves. SJSBC does not own the boats. SJSBC specializes in boats that can be used for multiday or weekly rentals. The smallest sailboat available is 28 feet in length, and the largest is 51 feet in length.

Each sailboat is fully equipped at the time it is leased. Most of the equipment is provided by the owners, but some is provided by SJSBC. Some of the owner-provided equipment is attached to the boat, such as radios, compasses, depth indicators and other instrumentation, stoves, and refrigerators. Other owner-provided equipment is not physically attached to the boat, such as sails, lines, anchors, dinghies, life preservers, and equipment in the cabin (e.g. dishes, silverware, cooking utensils).

Once the boats are obtained from the boat owners, a SJSBC Manager does a visual inspection on each boat to identify missing or defective equipment. If a boat is found to have any missing or defective equipment, then the boat owner is informed to fix the missing equipment within 3 days. If the boat owner cannot fix or replace the missing equipment in 3 days, then the boat is returned to the owner. If the equipment is fixed or there is no missing or defective equipment, then a SJSBC manager produces a lease document and a copy of the document is placed in the boat and another copy is sent to the boat owner. After this lease document is placed in the boat, SJSBC manager allows customers to book the boat for rental. SJSBC provides consumable supplies such as charts, navigation books, tide and current tables, soap, dish towels, toilet paper, and similar items.

Prior to handling the boat to a customer for rent, a SJSBC clerk hands over the customer a list of all equipment and consumable supplies that are present in the boat. An itinerary and customer rental agreement are also provided to the customer by the clerk. Keeping track of equipment is an important part of SJSBCs responsibilities. Much of the equipment is expensive, and those items not physically attached to the boat can be easily damaged, lost or stolen. SJSBC holds the customers responsible for all the boats equipment during the period of their rental.

SJSBC likes to keep accurate records of its customers and rentals, and customers are required to keep a log during each rental. Some itineraries and weather conditions are more dangerous than others, and the data from these logs provides information about the customer experience. This information is useful for marketing purposes, as well as for evaluating a customers ability to handle a particular boat and itinerary.

After the customer is done with the trip, the boat is returned to the SJSBC. The SJSBC Manager again does a visual inspection to identify any missing or damaged equipment. If a missing or damaged equipment is found, then the customer pays for the damaged or missing equipment. The Manager also checks whether the boat is returned within the rental period. If the boat is returned after the rental period, then the manager adds a separate charge to the rental expense. When the boat is handed over to SJSBC, the customer is billed with all the rental expenses (damage/missing equipment -if any and extra rental days-if any). Following this, the customer pays for the rental expense. Once the lease period with the boat owner expires, then the boat is handed back to the owner in the same condition as it was obtained prior to the lease.
