Primary activities that will be affected include inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and service to the customer. First, focusing on inbound logistics will be the method of obtaining DRI itself. Since we will be working with a domestic supplier rather than Russia and Ukraine, we will be able to cut costs by transporting the DRI in a shorter amount of time and distance, and also by using different vehicles to transport the material itself. This will help balance out some of the extra cost that using DRI may bring, while still creating value. This will allow SDI to firmly state that our products are made domestically, using domestic supplies to create our products.

Next, looking at operations, we will have to figure out the correct balance of DRI with recycled materials to make the best products possible. We want to eliminate as much waste as possible, so it is crucial to make sure we are not using too much DRI or too much recycled steel to create the proper blend of metals for our production. So, that entire process will need to be re-evaluated until that problem can be solved. Along with this, some employees that will be working with DRI will need to be retrained in order to know how to continue to do their job well. This may increase costs and resources for the extra training, but will end up paying off in the end because their employees knowledge is a powerful asset in production. This, once again, creates value for the new products that SDI will be able to offer.

Outbound logistics, if our forecasted sales are correct, will also have to be increased in order to keep up with a higher demand for our new products. This means that SDI will need to account for more transportation of goods, storage, and methods of exporting steel to other countries. With a purer form of iron ore being used, this may affect the density of each product, therefore causing different amounts of weight that will need to be accounted for. Whether that be buying more trucks to make more trips, or vehicles that may need to haul more freight. Either way, our products will need to be delivered to our customers.
