Problem 1
Numerical Problem (20 points): Here is an easy one to start of this HW and give you space to practice the SFD/BMD for a beam with multiple loadings. Let's assume you are a structural engineer tasked with designing a beam under a MRI machine in a hospital. The dead load of the MRI machine is typically a uniformly distributed load of 10kNm. When the MRI machine starts spinning, it induces a couple moment of 20kN.m. The additional 15kN point load is the load from the additional accessories/equipments. Draw the SFD and BMD for the beam under a MRI machine shown below using the method of sections. Please make sure you provide numerical values of shear force and bending moment at locations where the loading changes (0,2,3,4,6 meters) and where the shear force and bending moment has the maximum positive and negative magnitudes.
Your diagrams/plots should be on an engineering paper or you can use the engineering paper template uploaded on Canvas. Unclear SFD/BMD, or SFD/BMD not drawn on engineering paper, or SFD/BMD not drawn as per engineering specs will lose upto 10 points. Also, please make sure you box/highlight the various equations you created for various segments along the beam for us to give you partial points. Just creating SFD/BMD without laying down the steps/equations will get you only 5 points.
