Problem 1. Tensile Test (20 points)
You conducted a tensile test on a cylindrical aluminum specimen (AA 2011 T-3). Your experimental
data is presented in the attached Excel file (Take Home Test 1 Version D Fa 2024/Problem 1):
a) Calculate the percent elongation and the percent reduction in area (SHOW CALCULATIONS)
b) Determine the ultimate (engineering) tensile strength (SHOW CALCULATIONS: maximum force
divided by A0)
c) Calculate the modulus of elasticity.
Copy and paste the Excel plot here and type the result.
Note: The plot should be engineering stress versus CORRECTED engineering strain.
e) Plot in the same figure the true stress versus true strain and the engineering stress versus the
engineering strain. Show the plot here. Perform a hand calculation for the true stress and strain
at the UTS point.
Note:
Recall that the true stress-strain should be truncated at the UTS point.
f) Calculate the tensile toughness.
Note:
Copy here the first four lines of your calculations for the areas under the curve you
calculated in Excel.)
Then, state the equation you used and type your answer
