Problem and Issue Identification
What are the central facts of the case and the assumptions you are making based on these facts?
FACTS: Sarah is busy, Sarah has many tasks to complete, Covid has changed the way people work together, The culture in Sarahs business is not good, Many people are frustrated with the tasks being asked of them, Sarah has done well in the business so far. This new project is not as appealing anymore, as Sarah mentions many times that the company drive doesnt feel the same anymore. Sarah has too many tasks. Michael Herald is checked out and is only looking out for himself. Evidence, Michael is reluctant to accept the bonuses for project deadlines. If he was a good worker, he would accept those as he would benefit from that.
ASSUMPTIONS w EVIDENCE: With Sara being busy, I can assume she is stressed. Also, I can assume she is nearing burning out as question highlights multiple pieces of evidence. Ill cite it again here. the excitement she had felt when the firm first announced its acquisition now seemed like a distant memory. After this, she goes on to tell you that it doesnt fit in with the company's integration process. This is an important issue later on as their associates and specialists lacked training. This causes Reynolds frustrations as she is overworked and overloaded. As you can see in the text, Sarah Reynolds couldnt even get back to Gabe Steens email as she had many other things on her plate.
What is the major overriding issue in this case? What central question or issue does this case address that merits its study in this course and in connection with the chapter or material you are now covering?
Many overriding issues connect to the content of this course.
Firstly the overriding problem of hybrid work and the issues of nonfacetoface to face communication come into play. I referenced the podcast How Do I Communicate With Taft in class for communication. Also, effective communication techniques such as not being wordy, being genuine, and empowering others to succeed can improve efficiency and teamwork in the business.
Another issue is the lack of training of some of the employees which is a direct responsibility of human resource management not giving associates the tools and training a person needs. As covid changed the work environment maybe its time for human resource management to undergo some change. Chapter in our assigned readings talks about human capital and the importance of talent development and succession planning. It also says that it is more of the managements side of things when it comes to aligning training with the companys goals Principles of Management Textbook, chapter
Too many things are being thrown at Sarah and for some of the problems she cant even do anything about them. For instance, in the text when Aaron Dell expresses his problem with feeling like a secondclass citizen here. There is a problem with integration in management and communication along the chain that doesnt allow for an efficient business. When people have to ask other people for information that goes along with the in class article Pieces of Advice for FirstTime Managers highlighting that trust is given and not earned. If Sarah had been trusted with assisting this associate Aaron would have been more happy and so would have Sarah.
What subissues or related issues in the case merit consideration and discussion?
One of the subissues is that Sarah is very busy and is getting backed up on work. This is causing an issue as she has to make an important decision that may decide whether her duties for these tasks still imply or not if she were to take the new job. An example in the text is Sarah not responding to Gabe Steens email as she is very busy already.
Another issue is that the work just doesnt feel the same. The ongoing work environment change has caused her to feel less connected to her employees at work and not as connected to her family at home. She had disagreements at work such as not pampering the associates which caused them to make mistakes. As the work life and culture change because of client requests and because of the pandemic, Sarah doesnt feel like she gets as much out of her role productivitywise and happinesswise.
Not only are people not being trained correctly and thoroughly bought into the companys goals. The landscape of the business is also changing, requiring them to hire many more outside professionals which can be green and make work harder for everybody else. This is a MAJOR reason as I dont see Sarahs work life getting better, with their company having to outside hire these professionals. Training will be different and even if she takes the promotion she is still not doing what made her love the job in the first place and that is talking with clients!
