Problem Description: A highway sign 14 x 9 and thickness of 0.2 is mounted to the support structure
as shown below such that it is 21 away from the center of a 42 highway. The bottom of the sign to the
highway is 18. The objective of this project is to design anchor bolts that can support the post of the
highway sign that can withstand a maximum wind speed of 80 mph and the weight of the pole and sign,
and capable of breaking away when struck by a vehicle. The vertical and horizontal portions of the pole
must be designed for the same capabilities as outlined above (Strength of Materials Project). The pole
material and geometry must first be finalized. Define the number, grade, size, surface coating, and the
torque of the bolts to be used to support this highway sign. Form groups of no more than four people and
work as a team to solve the design project. Everyone must contribute equally. A report and a presentation
is required for each group.
Report: A design project report is required and will be graded according to the following.
Cover Page: A cover page with title, class information, date, and list of authors.
Abstract (20 pts): One paragraph summarizing the objective, approach, results and conclusions.
Objective (10 pts): Brief section outlining the problem description and project requirements.
Analysis (40 pts): Detailed description of design methodology, include governing equations, all
associated mathematical derivations and calculation, drawings, free-body-diagrams or other related
diagrams or figures, and results.
Results and Conclusions (20 pts): Summarize the results and indicate lessons learned from the project.
Discuss strengths and weaknesses of your design.
Appendix (10 pts): Include all references and hand-written calculations associated with the project.
Presentation: A PowerPoint presentation of no longer than 15 minutes to the entire class describing your
design and selling your design on its perceived design advantages, cost, and durability. All group
members must participate in the presentation. The presentation must contain the following section:
Cover Sheet: Project title, date, class number and name, name of authors.
Outline: A brief outline of what will be presented.
Objective: Outline of problem description and project requirements.
Results & Discussion: Summary of analysis performed, and results obtained.
Conclusion: Summary of results and recommendations
