Scenario A: Methodology: Prototype development , why?

ABC'' is a new enterprise recently started by a few young entrepreneurs, intended to develop robotic systems using IT based solutions. TENZ is a well-established automobile manufacturing plant, Interested in automating some of the operations of the plant. As the first step towards automation, TENZ has decided to deploy a robotic arm to pick and place a large number of bolts from one tray of a conveyor belt to another tray of a different conveyor belt. Moving one bolt at a time. TENZ has asked ABC to demonstrate the robotic arm for the said purpose as a proof of concept. This is the first project being executed by ABC. TENZ would like to have a first experience of the robotic arm before signing the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with ABC. After MOU sign-off, TENZ would provide the complete set of requirements of the robot.

Scenario B: Methodology: Waterfall model, why?

Sunny Happy Care (SHC) Clinic, a small primary care practice, decides to upgrade its paper records to an EHR system. Before purchasing and deploying, the clinic does extensive planning, including evaluation of its requirements and analysis of market options. The planning team ultimately selects and implements a commercial EHR system. According to the project plan, the business manager is assigned to test and evaluate the EHR system after go-live. In her analysis, she determines that the SHC Clinic staff is spending excessive time manually entering laboratory data because a laboratory integration module was not part of the initial purchase. Consequently, the staff enters a new cycle of planning, requirements gathering, and analysis of vendor options, leading to purchase and deployment of a laboratory module. Subsequent retesting and reevaluation of the EHR system now shows satisfactory improvement in staff effort and availability of laboratory data.

Scenario C: Methodology: Incremental development , why?

The Central City Hospital complex includes three hospital campuses and five outpatient clinics on an existing EHR system. Hospital senior management has determined that a new EHR system is needed. An implementation team is assembled and begins exploring options. The team decides that the best option is to develop a new in-house EHR system that will replace the existing system and can be implemented in multiple phases. The team outlines three modules to develop first: the admission, discharge, and transfer module, the scheduling module, and the inpatient module. One section of the team builds and tests the software for the new scheduling module in a nonproduction environment and then brings it online. While that system is being evaluated in the active environment, members of another group begin testing the admission, discharge, and transfer module they developed. Management has planned for the overall implementation to take approximately 3 years.

Scenario D: Methodology: Spiral model, why?

Major Medical Care Systems is a group of related physician practices that offer ambulatory care for patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). The physicians decide they want to implement an EHR system that will connect all of the practices. When they investigate the possibilities, they are unable to find one system that meets their needs. They contract with a software development company to build a new system. The company receives their requirements and builds a demonstration prototype. The physician's request several changes, and the software company creates a second prototype. The process takes some time, because each cycle involves numerous discussions with the physicians and their staff and development of a new prototype. Eventually, however, the software company is able to build an EHR system that connects the practices and satisfies the physicians.
