Problem Statement: You are in a product development team that has carried out a survey in order to identify customers needs for a new, innovative ballpoint pen design. As a result of the survey, you received the following responses from the customers:
I like to hold pen in my pocket
I dont like my pocket smeared while pen is held in my pocket
I would like to hold the pen comfortably
It would be great if I could buy the pen cheaply
Based on the input you received from customers, you must now generate five different concepts for a ballpoint pen design and select the best concept(s) using concept screening and concept scoring.
Project Requirements:
Based on the customer input provided above, generate five design concepts for a ball point pen.
Use free-hand sketches for illustrating each concept. Specify the materials to be used in the design.
Translate the above list of customer statements about a ballpoint pen into customer needs. Use them as criteria in the screening and scoring processes
Concept screening:
Use Pugh Method for concept screening (you may use the XLS template on Canvas)(Do not use weights). There are two versions of the Pugh method. You may use either Option 1 Download Option 1or Option 2 Download Option 2.
Use a reference concept (i.e. a standard, cheap ballpoint pen) to compare your 5 pen concepts based on the criteria identified by the customers
Move the best ranking concepts into the next round (i.e. concept scoring)
Concept Scoring
Use Decision Matrix Download Decision Matrixto select the final product concept (you may use the XLS template on Canvas)
Assign weighted percentages for each criteria
Rank your concepts by comparing them with each other
Calculate sum of weighted rankings to select the winning concept
Submit the project by uploading the following required files to Canvas:
Completed spreadsheet (Excel) file/document for the Pugh Matrix showing your analysis and indicating the winner concept.
Completed spreadsheet (Excel) file/document for the Decision Matrix showing your analysis and indicating the winner concept.
Free hand sketches showing each concept generated.
