Problem: You are designing typical office building that is 2 stories tall with a flat roof. Each
level of the building is 15 feet tall. The building is located in a developed area of Los
Angeles with many other buildings around the site. The plan dimensions of the building are
30 feet by 30 feet. The wind pressure distribution was determined previously in Assignment
#4 as P0=18.1 psf and Ph=19.6 psf for this type of building.
Complete the following:
Determine the horizontal design static wind pressure (psf) at intermediate locations
(mid-height of first floor P0.5, top of first floor P1, mid-height of second floor P1.5)
Determine the resulting total force (kips) to the Roof (TOP of the 2nd floor) and the
2nd level (TOP of the 1st floor).
Using 3D equations of equilibrium, solve for the axial forces in the braces due to the
wind forces. This was studied in Structures I. Do the upper story force first, then
the lower story. Be sure to indicate tension or compression on these axial forces.
