PROJECT 1: CENSUS DATA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

You are working as part of a group creating a report that includes data from the most recent census. Your task is to create and format a worksheet using information from the census.gov website and chart the data.

1. Create a new workbook and save it asProject1_Census.xlsx.
2. IdentifythreeU.S. cities of your choice and enter the city and state names in cellsA4, A5, and A6.
3. Open a web browser and navigate to thedata.census.govwebsite. Use the most recent census data to locate the population, median age, number of housing units, and median income for each city (e.g. type "median income in Maryland" in the search box at the top of the page).
4. Enter the information into the respective cells in the worksheet, as shown in the image below but using cities of your own choosing.Note: If you are unable to locate the necessary data, either choose a different city or perform a search for another website containing the necessary data.
5. Format the data table using techniques you have learned to present the data in a visually appealing form such as:
   1. Set the column widths appropriately.
   2. Set labels alignment appropriately.
   3. Apply borders, gridlines and shading to the table as desired.
   4. Set the columns labels alignments appropriately.
   5. Align the worksheet vertically and horizontally on the page.
6. Enter a formula to find Average Household Income for all THREE cities.
7. Enter a formula to find the Total Population for all THREE cities.
8. Create charts that present the data for each of the four categories of data. Decide which chart types will best present the data. (Hint: If you are not sure which types to use, consider selecting he data and using the Recommended Chart button to narrow down and preview suitable choices.)
9. Place each chart on a separate sheet and format the charts to best present the data in a clear, attractive format.
10. Give each worksheet a descriptive name and color the tabs using theme colors. Reorder the sheets so that the data table appears first, followed by the charts.
11. Save and submit the workbook to the Assignment Folder.

Please submit the following to your Assignments Folder:

1. The completedProject1_Census.xlsxfile.
2. Submit a Project Reflection (see below).

PROJECT REFLECTION

Answer the following questions when you submit your assignments files.

1. Describe a situation in daily life when someone would use Microsoft Excel.
2. You made several decisions while creating the workbook for this assignment: how to lay out the data in the worksheet and which chart types to use. What was the rationale behind each of these decisions?
3. What issues or challenges did you face completing this project?Please submit your Project Reflection as a Microsoft Word document or just copy and paste your answers in your Assignments Folder's text box when you submit your assignment along with the rest of the required project files.

DUE DATE:TUESDAY 11:59 PM | EASTERN TIME (ET) - WEEK 2

Five (5) Day Late Period:The Assignments Folder will remain open 5 days after the due date for late submissions. There will be a 10% (or 40 point) reduction each day (24-hour period) the assignment is late. After 5 days, late assignments willnot be acceptedor graded. The Assignments Folder will be closed at this point as well and you will not be able to physically submit the assignment.

Exceptions may be allowed, on a case-by-case basis, for life situations (military deployment, medical illness, death in the family, etc). In all cases, timely notification of a "life situation" is critical to the approval of any extensions. All exceptions must be accompanied by official documentation, which is subject to inspection and approval. Work load, course load, vacations, or bad memory are not acceptable excuses.

Running Close to the Deadline?:Please do not wait until the last minute to submit your assignment. Give yourself at least a 5-hour window to account for any technical difficulties that might arise. If you experience technical difficulties beyond your control that do not allow you to successfully complete the assignment, immediately follow the steps below:

Step 1:Contact UMGC 360 Help and Support. Inform them off the problem you are having. Get a problem ticket number from them to document the situation. Step 2:E-mail me ASAP and include a description of the problem you are having and your problem ticket number from 360 Help and Support, so I can investigate the situation. Step 3:Attempt to attach your assignment to a message to me inside of LEO. Step 4:E-mail the assignment to me.

GRADE VALUE

This project is worth400 pointsor40%of your total grade for the course.

GRADE DEDUCTIONS

You will lose points for issues such as: not following directions, not submitting your work on time, and failure to include all required elements. Each omission will result in a partial point deduction.

To complete this project and receive full credit, you must submit your completed presentation to yourAssignments Folderunless you encounter problems--discussed above).
