Project Assignment 4: Data Analytics Research Project (Points: 100, Weight: 40%) Purpose: The Data Analytics Research Project is the main focus and central theme of the course. Its intent is to bring together the concepts, vocabulary, methods, and tools covered during the semester. Students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of the course material through exploration and analysis of a chosen dataset. A key requirement is identification of data types and appropriate selection and use of statistical and visualization tools associated with those types. Deliverables:
- General instructions:
- In Project Assignment 1 you learned about the general structure of a research paper
- In Project Assignment 2 you selected your research dataset and stated research questions to answer from your exploration and analysis
- In Project Assignment 3 you learned how to prepare a Literature Search for relevant research about your selected dataset
- For Project Assignment 4 (this one) you will put all of the above together into a research paper that explores and analyzes your dataset and answers your research questions.
- Apply the tools and methods of data analytics presented in this course. Using your selected dataset, demonstrate analyses and interpretations using R, Python, and SQL to produce appropriate statistical summaries and visualizations that answer your research questions and that support conclusions about the meaning and value derived from the dataset.
- You must show data ingest and exploration using R, Python, and SQL (all three). R or Python can be used for data cleaning & transformations, statistics, and visualizations as you choose. That is, use R for some work, Python for other work; demonstrate use of both.
- For SQL, show a schema for your dataset (i.e., define a table), load your dataset, and execute a few simple queries against the table to demonstrate your basic understanding of SQL for data summaries.
- Tables and visualizations must demonstrate good design (captions, titles, variable and axis labels, readability).
- See: https://www3.nd.edu/~pkamat/pdf/graphs.pdf
- Univariate analyses of each type of NOIR data must be shown; appropriate multivariate analyses must be shown (e.g., scatterplot, correlation, regression, etc.). If the dataset has very many data items, no need to analyze all items, choose the most interesting/promising items related to your research questions but be sure to include all of the above analysis types. If your dataset included text data, explore and analyze that using NLP methods.
- Explain any domain-specific technical terms, either as they are used, or in a Glossary. That is, dont just repeat terms without demonstrating that you what they mean.
- The project is to be organized and presented as a research paper. That is, define your research question(s) with respect to the dataset, discuss your approach, include a literature search for related work on the dataset, show and interpret your results, discuss any limitations of your study, and include appropriate references.
- Provide appropriate in-text citations and references as described in the AIT-580 FAQ and in the resources provided in the earlier Project Assignments.
- Your report will be checked with SafeAssign.

- Part of the evaluation of this assignment will be the quality, currency, and detail of the selected dataset. Many past students have selected very common, extensively analyzed datasets (e.g., from Kaggle, etc.). Do your own research and dont merely duplicate what others have done.
- If you change your mind about your dataset and select a new one, you will need to redo your research questions and literature search; dont do this at the last minute! There will be no time at the end of the semester for late projects.
- Optional, but recommended: https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html
- Brief description of your dataset and why you chose it
- Brief description of your research question(s)
- Brief summary of your methods
- Brief summary of your findings
- Brief discussion of lessons learned from the project.
