Project Brief: Task Scenario

A client has requested to write a report that documents the materials specification for the design and

construction of two structural members made from concrete in a new concrete bridge structure. The

two concrete members are as follows:

Member $1$: bridge substructure reinforced concrete piers

Member $2$: bridge superstructure prestressed concrete girders

These two members will form part of a new concrete bridge structure that will replace an existing

concrete bridge structure in Lilyfield New South Wales, which is no longer in service. The new concrete

bridge structure will be erected using the same design as the existing concrete bridge structure but

will be wider in width to accommodate more vehicular traffic. The new concrete bridge structure will

also be exposed to the same environmental conditions as the existing concrete bridge structure.

The five stages of the Lilyfield project have been set out as follows.

Project Task

For the given project scenario and each of the five stages above perform the following tasks to

document the concrete design requirements, concrete properties, concrete mix formulations, and$/$or

concrete material factors for the concrete to be used in each structural member.

Task $1$: Construction design stage of Member $1$

Focusing on the construction design stage for Member $1$ perform the following activities:

State and describe the functionality of one key design requirement taken from a standard or

specification that addresses the construction design stage

For the design requirement identified, describe one key concrete fresh property and

its trend needed in addressing the design requirement

Specific aspects that require addressing in this part of the report include:

Focus on addressing some workability related parameter for the member.

Assess how the member will be constructed in the formwork incorporating the reinforcing

steel and how this method of construction will take place onsite. For example, ready$-$mix

concrete will be placed in the formwork, onsite.
