Business Background for Creation of Project Charter
Overview of the Project:
Northern College has been expanding its offerings to students by providing various services on
campus and with the final completion of a new building there is space allocated to create a store
to sell computer and computer supplies while also offering hands on computer support. The space
layout is finalized but the final design elements need to be completed (ie. Painting, shelving for
product, furniture etc.) The plan is to have this up and running in 8 months with a team hired and
ready to open the doors to students at the beginning of the Fall Term. The next step is to get final
approval for the space from the College President so that the final designing of the space can
begin. The manager of the project is Fred Riley from Operations, and he reports into Jane
Crawley the Facilities Manager. Fred has been designated the project lead and Jane will be his
sponsor for the project.
The objective of this project is to implement a campus store when class starts beginning of
September 2024 with enough inventory (computers, computer supplies, such as memory sticks,
mouse pads, and cables etc.) to last through the first 4 weeks of classes as well as staff hired as
Computer Specialists to assist students.
Some of the activities that will need to be completed are:
1. Develop the store design and furnish with shelving, displays, desks and seating etc.
2. Determine what computers and supplies will be sold in the store.
3. Establish competitive prices for the computers and supplies.
4. Source and secure supply vendors.
5. Establish marketing, procurement, operations, and any other necessary departments for
the store.
6. Hire 3 staff: 1 Full time and 2 Part time (Northern College Students)
7. Promote the opening of the store.
8. Plan for the grand opening
The scope of the project does not include:
Development of any other school store departments
Store construction
