Project Description
It is desired to design a gravity retaining wall against foundation failure (ULS 1), sliding at the contact soil/footing (ULS 2), and overturning about the toe of the wall (ULS 3).
The unyielding wall retains a cohesionless sand (the same sand is underlying the wall foundation) with an internal friction angle of 35 and a unit weight of 18.2kNm3 when dry and 9.1kNm3 unit weight when submerged. The unit weight of the concrete is 24kNm3.
The wall is 4m tall from the foundation plane to ground surface behind the wall. The back of the wall is vertical (assume no soil/wall friction on the back of the wall), the ground surface behind the wall is horizontal. The water table behind the wall is at the foundation plane. The depth of soil in front of the wall is 0.5m.
The stem and footing of the wall are 1m thick. The breath of the foundatior is 2.5m with the stem centered on the foundation.
