Project Description: WSU is considering a co-generation steam turbine power plant for its electricity and
hot water needs. During the weekdays, the maximum demand for electricity is estimated at 50 MW . The
overall system should (at least) contain the following components: a boiler, 2 or 3 turbines, an open
feed water heater, a close feed water heater, 2 or 3 pumps, and a condenser/process heater for
transferring heat to the cold water. Feel free to add other components as necessary
Design Constraints:
(a) Efficiency of the thermal system should be higher than 45%
(b) Boiler pressure should be less than 25 MPa
(c) Combustion efficiency 90%
(d) All pumping energy should come from the turbine work
(e) City water enters the condenser at 10C, and leaves the condenser at 40C
Additional Considerations:
The power plant is turned off between 1 AM and 6 AM . Turbines' isentropic efficiency is 90%, while the
pumping process is nearly isentropic.
Deliverables for the Preliminary Report
(a) Design a co-generation plant for this purpose. Draw the system (block) and T-s diagram of the
system. Label each term in the block diagram. List all assumptions used in this project.
