PROJECT PROGRAMME Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management MODULE Project Scope and Scheduling YEAR ONE (1) INTAKE July 2024 MARKS 100 FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 2 [100 MARKS] Read the scenario below and answer ALL the questions that follow PROJECT SCENARIO Consider that you are a project manager at the department of mineral resources and energy in South Africa. The minister has called you and indicated that he wants you to be the project head for an important project entailing the reticulation of a new suburb with electricity. The suburb is in Johannesburg and is zoned as a hybrid business and residential suburb. Due to the numerous jobs that will be offered by the new businesses to residents in the suburb, the minister has a particular interest to ensure that this project is executed with prowess. This is further in lieu of the fact that the country's unemployment rate is exceedingly high. As the appointed project manager, one of your major performance indicators will undoubtedly be that the project must start on time and finish as per schedule. All tasks/activities must be executed within budget, scope and pre-determined quality and with the allocated resources. No deviation will be tolerated and this has been reiterated by the minister to you. Any deviation will result in declaring that the project was a failure. Furthermore, your credibility and promotion prospects within the department will be at risk. You are expected to undertake some external research in order to familiar yourself and your team with the complexities associated with the provision of electrical infrastructure and reticulation. You are expected to show depth of understanding of the department and its operations in your presentation. QUESTION 1 (20 Marks) Scope and schedule management are fundamental aspects of project management that offer numerous benefits to ensure successful project delivery. Appraise the key benefits of effective scope and schedule management in the context of your project. QUESTION 2 (20 Marks) Design a precise project charter for your project. Ensure adequate detail is provided for each element. Creativity is advised that will command better marks. QUESTION 3 (20 Marks) There are distinct differences between the project charter and project scope statement. Design a project scope statement for your project. Ensure that adequate information for each element is provided. QUESTION 4 (20 Marks) High-performing project teams are characterized by their exceptional ability to consistently achieve project objectives, exceed expectations, and deliver outstanding results. As project head, assume that you have a high performing project team assigned to the project. Appraise the factors associated with high performance teams in the context of your project team. QUESTION 5 (20 Marks) Controlling the scope of your project will contribute to one of your important outputs. Appraise the Outputs to Control Scope in the context of your project. GENERAL COMMENTS Marks in the project assessment are primarily awarded for the application of the relevant theory to the requirements of the assessment. Merely reproducing theory is deemed inadequate. The ability to undertake and reflect on research is a key component to the assessment. References The expected response to the assessment is outlined above. However, the depth of the theory is such that students may provide answers that may vary. The assessment will therefore be assessed by the examiner/marker in terms of the relevant theory and marked accordingly. The responses provided by students may not in their entirety be aligned to the marking guide, but could be a satisfactory response to the question. Students will be given full recognition for this.
