Question:
Propose a Design for a Business Intelligence/Data Warehouse System
You are the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of a large organization in an industry of your choice. Your organization has been suffering an alarming decline in profits from ticket sales for the past several years.
In your role as CIO, you realize the importance of a business intelligence/data warehouse system and how this can help your organization regain profits from ticket sales. But your boss, the CEO, and the Board of Directors do not understand why a new application and database system is needed at this time. Resources are tight and their focus is on the immediate bottom line. They point to the company's mainframe system that is already handling ticket sales transactions and ask, "Why can't you just assign some COBOL programmers or something? Make it a quick project, figure out how to increase sales and get profits back up using the big computers we already have!"
What would be your response to this suggestion? Why do you prefer your suggestion? Develop a proposal to your CEO and Board of Directors addressing all the following requirements:
- The importance of a business intelligence/data warehouse system, introducing it in terms they can understand
- How a business intelligence/data warehouse system is not a waste of time and money
- Why the present system is inadequate
- How a business intelligence/data warehouse system will increase profits from ticket sales by providing strategic information not currently available
Your paper (formal proposal) must conform to industry proposal writing format which consists of the following
- Proper page
- Executive summary - describe the overall project and benefits of the proposal (can be in bullet format).
- Table of Contents - list the major sections of the proposal and make sure to breakdown into a second level along with appropriate headings/subheadings
- Goals and specific objectives (including client needs / requirements)
- Solution: Describe the proposed solution in detail and tie its components to client needs while showing its anticipated impact/benefits
- Cover some of the following general proposal topics such as: risks/countermeasures, schedule, deliverable acceptance and quality assurance
- Recommendation/Conclusion: Call to action: remember a proposal is a sales tool (not solely from the financial aspect but rather selling your ideas, get buy-in.
- References - cite using APA
- Appendix - additional material which is referred to within the body of the proposal
