Start your research with literature reviews of the industry and of similar products, competitive audits, development of a vision statement, and research that includes the sample (who you will interview), where you will conduct the interviews, and what questions you will ask to guide the discussion. Lastly, you will create a persona hypothesis. This is a statement of what you anticipate finding through your interviews.
Assignment Instructions:
For this activity in one document (with a table of contents and title page) include the following:
- Vision Statement(https://www.thebalancesmb.com/vision-statement-2947999) that is used to describe the future vision of your product.
- Competitive Audit(analysis): Using the headings: Site name, URL, # of users, Target Audience, Features, Goal of Site, Is goal clear? In a spreadsheet compare at least five similar sites/products. You may add more headings if applicable.
- Research Plan
- Who will be your sample (who will you talk with?) You can speak with stakeholders, subject matter experts (SMEs), potential customers, potential users (note customers and users may be different - think of children's toys), user observations, and ethnographic interviews. Determine how many people will be in your sample. Try to get at least three.
- Where will you do this?
- Methods(what methods you will use, what questions will you ask to guide the discussion)
- Basic methods:
- Interview where the interaction happens
- Avoid a fixed set of questions
- Assume the role of an apprentice *not an expert
- Focus on GOALS first, tasks second. Answer the question - what is the problem that needs to be solved?
- Avoid making the user a designer
- Encourage storytelling
- Avoid leading questions
- Persona Hypothesis-answer the following questions - What different sorts of people may use this product? How might their needs and behaviors vary? What ranges of behavior and types of environments need to be explored? This will be a statement about what you anticipate finding through your research.
