A state's power of parens patriae (to act as a super-parent in the best interest of the child) is the backbone of the U.S. Juvenile Justice System. After reading Kent v. United States and In re Gault, we see that the Supreme Court challenges the juvenile court in being more accountable to the due process rights (fundamental fairness) of juveniles. What are your thoughts on the state's power of parens patriae in the juvenile justice system in contrast to the 14^th Amendment's due process rights and privileges for juveniles?

In Chapter 2 of our textbook, The Pittsburg Youth Study is highlighted with the question "Who are at-risk children?" This was a longitudinal study of 1,517 inner-city boys in Pittsburg, PA. The study highlighted that "the greatest demographic variable associated with delinquency was having a broken family." How is this rectified? Is it done through the Juvenile Justice System? If so, how? If not, how?
