Pros

Cost. Less or not as costly as incarceration. I truly believe the money saved could be put back into the community. these funds could be used to fund events that provide the community with resources and supplies. this brings me to my next pro. Community and family ties. This is the stage where officers begin to merge into and become accepted by the community. Officers create a sense of community, understanding, and togetherness.

Cons

"Too many offenders, not enough officers." If there are not enough officers working in the field, the probation system can get overburdened. If there are too many offenders and not enough officers, the officers may not be able to supervise them the way they system intended them to. Another con would be the conditions of probation. Although probation provides freedom from incarceration, some would argue that offenders on probation are not actually free at all. You could have to attend mandatory meetings, have a mandatory curfew, mandatory check in, etc. Things like this can be a lot to keep up with and especially all at once. Offenders who violate these conditions face harsh consequences up to reincarceration. This is controversial because the offender did not actually commit another crime.
