Purpose
Computer Aided Design (CAD) is a necessary tool used in many disciplines of engineering to
communicate design ideas. CAD allows engineers to create accurate 2D and 3D
representations of physical objects and systems, which can be utilized throughout the design
process. This assignment will introduce you to basic part creation. By completing this
assignment, you will be able to:
Use basic sketch tools (line, rectangle, circle) to create a 2D sketch (SLO 2a)
Apply constraints and dimensions to fully define a 2D sketch (SLO 2b)
Use basic positive extrusions to create 3D models (SLO 2c)
Create accurate 3D models from provided physical objects (SLO 2d)
This assignment will also help you become familiar with the basics of the Onshape software
platform and provide you an opportunity to practice measuring the dimensions of physical
components using dial calipers.
Task
If you have not yet done so, create your Onshape account (instructions are in in Prep G01).
Create a new folder in Onshape named Combination Lock Applications.
Then create a new document that youll place in that folder called Combination Lock Parts.
We will continue to use this document for many of your application assignments this semester.
In the document, create two new Part Studio tabs and rename them as Deadbolt Restraint
Plate and Deadbolt Guide Rod.
Then, using the physical components and dial calipers available at your table, create accurate
parts of the Deadbolt Restraint Plate and the Deadbolt Guide Rod (images of these parts are
shown below). Set the material for the Deadbolt Restraint Plate to MDF and the Deadbolt
Guide Rod to Poplar. The units for both parts should be IPS (inches, pounds, seconds).
